Fall Home Checkup: 10 Things to Do Before Cold Weather Arrives
Fall is the perfect time to give your home a little attention before winter settles in. A few simple maintenance tasks now can help protect your home, improve comfort, and possibly prevent costly repairs later.
Here’s a practical Fall Home Checkup every homeowner can use.
1. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Falling leaves can quickly clog gutters and cause water to back up around your roof or foundation. Clean out leaves and debris, and make sure downspouts direct water away from the house.
2. Check the Roof
Take a look for missing, loose, or damaged shingles. Also watch for signs of wear around chimneys, vents, and flashing. Catching a small issue now may help prevent leaks during winter weather.
3. Schedule Furnace or HVAC Maintenance
Before you really need the heat, have your system checked and replace the filter. A properly maintained system can run more efficiently and reduce the chance of a breakdown on a cold day.
4. Seal Drafts Around Windows and Doors
Feel for cool air around windows and exterior doors. Weatherstripping or caulk can help keep warm air inside and may reduce heating costs.
5. Disconnect Outdoor Hoses
Remove garden hoses from exterior faucets before freezing temperatures arrive. If your home has shut-off valves for outdoor faucets, turn them off and drain the lines.
6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Fall is a good reminder to test every smoke and carbon monoxide detector in the home. Replace batteries when needed and make sure each unit is working properly.
7. Inspect the Fireplace and Chimney
If you use a fireplace, have the chimney inspected and cleaned if necessary before the season begins. Also check the fireplace damper and make sure it opens and closes properly.
8. Prepare Your Yard
Trim dead branches, rake leaves, clean up garden beds, and store outdoor furniture or decorations that could be damaged by winter weather. A little cleanup now makes spring much easier, too.
9. Check Exterior Lighting
With shorter days ahead, good exterior lighting becomes even more important. Replace burned-out bulbs and make sure walkways, entrances, and driveways are safely lit.
10. Walk Around Your Home’s Exterior
Take a slow walk around the outside of your home and look for anything that seems out of place: loose siding, cracked caulk, damaged screens, foundation cracks, or areas where water may collect.
A Little Maintenance Can Go a Long Way
You don’t have to tackle everything in one weekend. Even a few small projects can help protect your home and keep it looking well cared for.
And if you’re thinking about selling in the months ahead, regular maintenance can make a big difference when buyers begin looking closely at your property.
