Sandwich has roots dating back to the 1850s, when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad helped shape the town’s early growth. The community was first known as Almon, then Newark Station, before being named Sandwich by “Long John” Wentworth after his hometown of Sandwich, New Hampshire. The city grew quickly after 1855, and several local landmarks soon followed, including the Sandwich Fair, which began in 1858, and the Sandwich Opera House, built in 1878.

Today, Sandwich is a great place to enjoy local history, parks, shops, restaurants, and community events.
